What Metals Do You Buy in a Mixed Load?
July 7, 2026
How scrap metal pricing works in Ogden
If you are sorting a load for a trip to our Ogden recycling page, the payout usually comes down to weight, metal type, cleanliness, and the day’s market rate. In plain terms, the yard is not just paying for pounds, it is paying for how easy your load will be to sort, process, and resell.
The three biggest levers behind the quote are easy to spot:
- Metal category, because steel, aluminum, copper, and mixed loads do not trade the same way.
- Contamination or prep level, because dirt, plastic, insulation, and attached hardware lower the value of the load.
- Current commodity movement, because local scrap pricing can move with market conditions from one day to the next.
That is also why clean aluminum usually lands in a higher value tier than mixed metal. Clean aluminum takes less sorting, has a more predictable resale path, and costs the yard less to process, so the payout is usually stronger.
When people ask how pricing works here, our short answer is this: the cleaner and more clearly identified the metal is, the closer the quote stays to the top of the range. If you are unsure whether a pile belongs in the steel bin or the nonferrous pile, our what we buy page is the quickest way to check.
If you are comparing local scrap yard pricing, think in tiers, not fixed numbers. A better-prepped load almost always starts the conversation higher.
Why clean aluminum and mixed metal are priced differently
Clean aluminum, painted or attached aluminum, and mixed metal all move in different directions at the counter. Clean aluminum usually gets the strongest payout direction, painted or attached aluminum often drops one tier because it needs more handling, and mixed metal usually falls lower because the yard has to separate it before resale.
That is why aluminum scrap prices are tied to prep as much as to weight. The difference usually comes down to three downgrade triggers:
- Contamination, such as dirt, wood, plastic, insulation, or nonmetal fasteners.
- Unknown alloy mix, because the yard cannot price what it cannot sort cleanly.
- Extra sorting labor, which adds time and processing cost after the scale reading.
| Load type | Prep level | Common contaminants | Likely price direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean aluminum | Separated, stripped, and visible as one type | Very little | Highest |
| Painted or attached aluminum | Mostly aluminum, but with coatings or small attachments | Paint, screws, brackets, trim pieces | Middle |
| Mixed metal | Several metals together in one load | Steel, aluminum, wire, plastic, fasteners | Lowest |
That table is the simplest way to understand mixed metal pricing customers ask about. The more mixed and uncertain the pile looks, the more the price moves toward the lowest grade in the load.
We also see a practical pattern across the yard, clean loads are faster to grade, and faster grading usually means fewer surprises at payout. For more details on how that fits into our day-to-day process, see our recycling services page.
How to sort a load before you make the trip
A fast sorting process saves time and usually protects value. At Clearfield Recycling, we recommend starting with the easiest separation first, then deciding whether extra cleanup is worth the effort.
- Separate ferrous from nonferrous with a magnet. If the magnet sticks, you have steel or iron. If it does not, the material may be aluminum or another nonferrous metal.
- Pull out obvious trash and attachments. Plastic caps, insulation, rubber, bags, and loose hardware slow grading and can trigger a downgrade.
- Keep aluminum in its own pile. Aluminum scrap prices are usually better when the yard can identify the load quickly and cleanly.
- Group by metal type, not by project. A separated pile of aluminum, a pile of steel, and a pile of mixed offcuts are easier to grade than one bin of leftovers from several jobs.
The rule we use is simple: if cleanup time is more than the likely payout gain, stop there. Spending 20 minutes removing a few tiny attachments makes sense, but spending an hour stripping a low-value mixed load usually does not.
Sorting this way helps the yard recognize the material faster and lowers the chance of a mixed metal downgrade. It also makes the counter conversation shorter, which is useful when you are bringing in a larger load.
What we saw on our aluminum and mixed metal drop-off
We brought in aluminum and mixed metal, got a good price on both, and felt the payout matched the effort we put in. The load had enough separation to be easy to read, and that showed up in the way the scale and grading went.
What stood out most was the customer service. The staff were helpful, the process stayed friendly, and the handoff at the counter moved quickly. There was no feeling of confusion or waiting around for someone to figure out what we had brought in.
That kind of visit matters because the scale reading is only part of the experience. When the price is fair and the service is strong, the whole drop-off feels easier to trust.
We have found that this matters just as much in local scrap pricing as the posted rate itself. If the yard can explain the grade clearly and keep the process moving, the payout makes more sense to the person bringing in the load. If you want to compare that experience with other customers’ feedback, our reviews page is a good place to start.
That is one reason we think Clearfield Recycling stands out in the local conversation, the pricing needs to be fair, but the counter experience has to be solid too.
What happens at weigh in, grading, and payout
Most visits follow the same order. For a straightforward load, check in usually takes 5 to 10 minutes, weigh in takes 2 to 5 minutes, grade check takes another 5 to 10 minutes, and payout happens immediately after approval. If you compare local scrap yard pricing, that sequence is what keeps the visit predictable.
The quote can change after inspection for three common reasons, hidden contamination, oversized pieces that need handling, and materials that do not match the original grade. If the yard finds mixed metal inside what looked like clean aluminum, the payout usually drops to the lower grade.
Many yards pay by cash, check, or electronic method, and the fastest option is usually the one with the fewest steps after approval. At Clearfield Recycling, we like when that handoff stays simple, because simple usually means less time at the counter.
Questions people ask before they bring scrap to the yard
Why do scrap metal prices Ogden yards post change from day to day?
Prices move with commodity markets, local processing costs, and yard inventory needs, so quotes can change from one day to the next. Some yards update rates daily, while others refresh weekly, and the local posted rate can differ even when the metal type is the same.
Is it worth cleaning a load before I drop it off?
Yes, but only if the cleanup takes less time than the payout gain. A 10-minute sort can be worth it, while stripping an hour of mixed scraps usually is not.
Can a mixed load still get a fair payout?
Yes, a mixed load can still pay well if the valuable pieces are separated enough for quick grading. Keeping aluminum apart from steel and removing obvious contaminants usually protects more value than leaving everything together.
When should I skip a drop-off altogether?
Skip the trip if the load is mostly trash, tiny offcuts, or low-grade mixed scrap that would take 15 minutes or more to sort. In that case, the fuel, time, and handling effort can erase the value before you ever reach the scale.
